Project Ploughshares: No More WarA Profile of the Faith-Based Organization that Works for Peace
Project Ploughshares is a Canadian, faith-based, interdenominational peace group seeking to achieve peaceful resolutions to conflict through the laying down of arms.
The founding basis for Project Ploughshares is the idea to live out the example set in the Bible of people of faith being peacemakers. Project Ploughshares is a non-denominational Christian organization with a mandate to promote peace, justice, and human rights all over the world. A particular quote from the Bible often used in Project Plougshares' literature is: "and they shall beat their swords into ploughshares, and spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation; neither shall they learn war any more." (Isaiah 2:4) The Purpose of Project PloughsharesTo achieve these goals, Project Ploughshares works with other peace organizations, non-governmental organizations, and governments themselves in Canada and abroad. The organization hopes that through its efforts, governments will develop alternative policies towards conflict. Conflicts, after all, are inevitable, but the ways in which they are dealt with does not have to be violent or through the use of arms. A History of the OrganizationProject Ploughshares was founded in 1976 in response to the call to the Christian church to be a peacemaker. As a result, the organization is solution-based to find productive and effective ways to prevent armed conflict ans create peaceful resolutions. The organization has become Canada's largest peace education and research organization, and welcomes people from all faiths and backgrounds. Issues Project Plougshares Seeks to ResolveSome of the issues with which Project Ploughshares has been involved include nuclear arms, Canada's involvement in Afghanistan, and other peace and human rights issues across the globe. The organization believes that six core pillars of human security will help achieve peace: Local branches of Project Ploughshares exist all over Canada, including Edmonton and Calgary.
